Easing Travel Away From Kids

flying without kids

In a few days I’ll be travelling to Georgia for work.  This will be my first time travelling away from the kids because of work and while I have been away from them for short periods of times, this feels different.  They know what the routine is, but it’s important to reassure them letting them know I’m just a phone call away.  I’ll be back before they know it, but here are my tips to help ease travel time away from kids.

1.  Let them know that you will call them every day and if possible, FaceTime, Skype or tango.  No better time to take advantage of technical advancements than when being away.

2.  If possible, clean up at home before you leave.  Yes your family will help while you’re away, but if you are able to, you’ll feel a little less stress knowing you left the laundry complete, the rooms tidied, clean bed sheets, etc.

3.  Be generous with the hugs and kisses before you go.  The kids may be clingy or extra loving, go ahead and enjoy those moments.

4.  Leave a list for daddy or the caregiver, with anything you don’t want them to forget, because even if you repeat it 20 times, they may forget.

5.  One of my friends, who travels extensively for work, brings a small stuffed animal from her two kids.  She then takes pictures of them travelling along with her, on the plane, at the hotel, at a restaurant.  I’m going to try this, even though the kids were worried I’ll “lose” their toys.

I am excited to have this alone time away from them but will definitely miss my little monkeys like crazy.  Let’s see if this trip recharges my batteries or just drains me dry.  I’ll be sure to keep you posted.  Share any tips you have to ease travel away from kids below.  I’d love to hear from you.
